WIP: 6mx3m Pent Workshop build: Exterior Done!

Better not tell us colonists that we are doing it wrong. 😱🤫 It's been working for us since before the 70's when I was a framers helper out of high school and that was near Vancouver where it is just as wet as England. I've never seen any house or building built "backwards" like you do. Main...

How NOT to make field panels - Do Not Do this!

You got more b**** than I do. I would put it in a table saw though if it would stick out of the table enough and run the panel vertically against a tall fence. Don't need to as I can put knives in the W&H planer moulder and run them with that. Pete

I'm not a member but it seems to be alive. 1 new post today and 29 in the last month. Did you forget the secret handshake? https://www.facebook.com/groups/1746238365689311

One for the domestic sparkies out there

Here when one puts in an offer on a house it is subject to inspection, paid for buy the buyer. Inspectors are licensed and go over the entire home from foundation to roof and note anything in their report, including electrical, roof shingle life left, substandard structural, plumbing and...

    MRMDF 30mm thick help

I got some 3/4" in the past and it looked identical to standard MDF except it had blue inked "moisture resistant" stamped around the edges. I would think that if it was MRMDF that it should be marked or have a sticker on it if not following your usual conventions. Perhaps contact them and ask...

    Sliding Disc/Belt Sander

You have the wall height and it is clear, that would allow the sander to be mounted "pendulum saw" style. Swing it to you and lock it in place, do the sanding, swing it back to sit until next time. You only need some wood, a couple decent sized gate hinges and a pin to drop in a hole in the...

    Thoughts on this.

I only watched a couple minutes worth but I see a very short life for the sanding belts. They are going to be turning twice as fast as a normal sander would which suggests they won't last long. I'll stick to the jointer/surfacer that I have and keep the sanding grit out of my saw. Pete

    Circularising Aluminium Pipe!

I would classify those sizes as tubing and I doubt you will be able to swage them perfectly round or close to it. How much out of round are they and how round do you need, your tolerance? What is the end use? How much of the tube needs to be round and how long are the finished pieces destined to...

    Biscuit Joiner or Dowels

I'll be one of the few that would recommend a biscuit machine for your mitred corners. Very easy to make perfectly aligned joints and strong enough, especially if you put a stretcher or shelf in the tables. There is not enough thickness to make dowels work right unless you are very accurate and...

Raised panel doors and yacht varnish tips for the weary.

What beam size do I need ?

I'm no structural engineer but looking at these span tables for roof joists (yours will vary), as long as your lintels were strong enough you could skip the midspan beam and use 38mm x 235mm on 300mm centres running from front to back. If you had to go to 38mm x 286mm because of availability you...

Badly listed table saw cast iron

It is as far as I can see strictly a ripping saw as there doesn't seem to be any way of tilting the blade and since most of the members have tiny shops it is too big especially being a specialized piece of equipment. That puts it in a very limited market. Sadly I see it ending up scrapped. Pete

Raised panel doors and yacht varnish tips for the weary.

Man I never would have put that much work into a place I was renting unless the landlord was going to give me many months of free rent. Come to think of it I wouldn't have put the effort into my own house. 😉 You might not ever get them looking new but they look much better. Pete

    Saving fuel

I'm going to make the switch in the next week or two and will put them on a scale but the fact remains the milage is better in the winter. 11 or 12 litres per hundred kilometres in the summer verses 13 or 14 litres per hundred kilometres in the winter. I won't be peeling the tires off the rims...

    Saving fuel

Getting beaned by the snowplow doing 100K clearing the shoulder doesn't appeal to me a lot. I do know a guy that does ride his bike in the city down to -25C 🥶 but he grew up here and might have frozen a few brain cells along the way.🤪 My milage is better in the summer because in the winter the...

    What is this?

Put a bevel on each half of the bandsaw blade about 2 or 3 times as long as the thickness, much like you do when using shorter pieces of baseboard on a wall. Clamp it in the clamps of the electric unit with silver solder/braze between the ends. Squeeze the handle down while applying power to...

    Vaccum pump filter?

I can't say with certainty but drawing the fumes from the vacuum chamber though water will not capture all the acetone and it will still end up in your pump. You would have to draw the fumes through an activated charcoal filter as well. I don't know how the "plexitone" will fair when it looses a...
