Repairing a William IV Rosewood Chair

Your pictures take me back to when I was a little kid watching the upholsterers covering chairs. Then it amazed me to watch them take a magnetic tack hammer and eat mouthful of tacks, spitting them out on the tack hammer one at a time as they drove them into the seats. They gave me a few tacks...

    Proposed workshop build

Some areas of Canada do a variation of the footings and block walls you mention heimlaga by pouring a solid concrete wall on top of the footings. When I was a pup out of high school near Vancouver BC I worked as a framers helper. We put in the footings and forms for modest sized houses without...

    Sander and dust extractor

If and that is a big if, you have the air compressor capacity the air powered versions of the Mirka sanders are about 1/3 the cost of the electric ones. If you can do air power then explore the industrial brands like Dynabrade. They have every conceivable kind of sander, grinder etc in a huge...

Rubber feet for bench grinder needed

Another point of view. I have always pulled the rubber feet off my grinders when I bolted them down to a stand or to a block of wood to hold it in the bench vice. I could see having them if the grinder was to sit on the bench without being bolted to it but they can sometimes vibrate around more...

    Proposed workshop build

Given that very large structures have been/are built on piers a worksop of any size you are likely to build will not be restricted by that type of foundation. Pier Foundations | House Plans and More Don't forget that many river and ocean side docks are built on them and they can be huge. If you...

    Beds revisited

You have a future making sleds, toboggans and skis. :) In your neck of the woods you might need to find a big sand dune though. Pete

    Sander and dust extractor

Mike and others. Even though Festool sanders are not at the moment making your hands tingle it will only be a matter of time. I wear them all the time for any tool that make the slightest shake in order to reduce further damage to my hands. Best ones I have found are the Impacto Air Gloves. They...

    Petrol powered planer…

Given that the Honda engine is likely much younger than the planer I believe it is a conversion by someone without the power near their shop. Roll it out on a dry day, flatten a bunch of boards, put the machine away and then drag out a thicknesser with its own motor or take the wood to one with...

    And yet another problem

I'd wager the dealer service told him he needs synthetic oil. My bet is the manual doesn't call for it, just normal 5-30 or 5-40 oil. Nissan always tried to pull that on our Rogue and Frontier. They always look hurt when I tell them nope. Pete

    Stuck on this one..

K&S Precision Metals make and sell solid, square and round tube etc for the hobbit market direct or through model shops. There must be modelling shops in NZ that carry it or the same in other brands. You should be able to solder it together with plumbers solder unless you are good with silver...

    Norris Adjusters

deema since the improved hand tool myth thread was closed earlier today and some people were arguing over the Norris adjusters it looks like it has spawned its own thread so the battle can continue. 🙄 For what it is worth I like my Veritas NX60 and its "inferior" adjuster over the older Record...

    Improved hand tool myth.

I have a Butt Mortise Plane (T. S. Wheeler Co) that I bought years ago from LV, much like the Lie Nielson that it predates. It gets occasional use for hinge and lock mortises on boxes. Were I to buy one now it would be the Veritas as it uses the same blades as their router planes and has a nice...
