Hi Tom, What time period is that likely to be as my return on investment model is getting more complex by the minute? Ta, C

Sourcing Wooden Windows: Thermal Efficiency & Quality

Just so that casual readers don't get mislead: as of October 2010, windows in extensions to existing dwellings, should have a maximum whole window U-Value of 1.6 (doors <= 1.8 ) . The whole window U-Value is the rationalisation of the 'centre-pane' U-Value and the frame's U-Value using a...

Sourcing Wooden Windows: Thermal Efficiency & Quality

Thanks Dibs, but as I've got the BCO looking over this they must be certified for Part-L although I'm ignoring the FENSA rubbish as I intend to self-install. When I sell up, I'll simply offer idemnity insurance to the buyer and their pedantic conveyancer. Ta, C

Sourcing Wooden Windows: Thermal Efficiency & Quality

Dear readers, I'm trying to source 7 new timber windows and have become a little frustrated at the smoke and mirrors put out by many manufacturers and suppliers. There are some manufacturers eg Jeldwen who give potential buyers all the facts required to make an informed decision whilst others...

Doctor, Doctor! How do I get rid of you?

Thanks everyone! I should have said that my lawn is actually a 1 acre paddock so I've got my Father-in-law (farmer) to acquire some Doxstar/Pastor which are broad-acre alternatives offered by the same manufacturer of Grazon-90 mentioned by Mike (thanks). Many thanks, C

    Workshop Floor

I recently used C30 concrete incorporating 0.91kg/m-³ of Fibrin 23 polypropylene fibres over a suspended 'beam and polystyrene panel' flooring system. The fibres replaced A142 steel mesh, acting in a structural capacity (spread point load) and to prevent surface cracking whilst the concrete...

Doctor, Doctor! How do I get rid of you?

Dear readers, My garden has been invaded by Dock Leaf plants and I was wondering if anyone could recommend a selective weed killer that can be purchased and sprayed in bulk (weeds have spread over an acre) but that won't kill the underlying grass? Thanks, Chris

Drums & barrels: bungs, plugs, caps & closures - aaaahhhh!

Thanks Rob and FH - you have inspired me to make my own bung wrench! Firstly I made a transparent template of the internal profile: I then used the template to drill 6 x M6 holes in an oak offcut, shaped the offcut on the bandsaw into a wrench and finally attached M6 bolts: Job done!

Drums & barrels: bungs, plugs, caps & closures - aaaahhhh!

Dear readers, I need to securely close a bung / plug / cap / closure / trisure on a 205-Litre HDPE plastic drum. The specific type of bung is shown here: which is not to be confused with this type: I've spent quite some time trying to source a compatible bung wrench but as I'm currently...

Dormer framing - Reference designs wanted

Dear members, I'm framing two large dormers on my new roof and was wondering whether anyone has any reference framing designs to share? I intend to have a horizontal ceiling under the pitched roof of the dormer. I'm particularly interested to see designs using the 'valley-board' method. TIA...

    Shipping very heavy machinery internationally

Thank you to everyone who replied (except monkey man  ). It appears that the seller of the machine is a scammer: Gesmex Machinery, so I won't be importing from Spain! Frustratingly this is the third scam that I've come across in my search for a digger. Be careful of overly cheap...

    Shipping very heavy machinery internationally

Dear members, Being a tight git, I'm considering buying a very good value for money digger from Spain. Could anyone advise of realistic freight options and associated costs to transport a 3600kg digger from Spain to the UK? Also, would this import be subject to excise duty or does that not...

Nominal v CLS v Regularised timber joist dimensions

Some patient Googling has found this from TRADA: http://research.ttlchiltern.co.uk/pif294/tdk/geninfo/pdf/2-3_37.pdf which would suggest that the regularlised/machined target dimensions of a nominal 63x225mm joist would be 63x220mm with a tolerance of either -2/+4mm (Tolerance Class 1) or...

Nominal v CLS v Regularised timber joist dimensions

Dear members, My overly cautious structural engineer has 'helpfully' specified 225 x 63 mm C24 stress graded timber joists for the upper storey floor of my extension. At one end the joists will sit in masonry hangers and at the other they will be built into a steel beam (actually a universal...

    First W.I.P - Ride-on Kids Aeroplane.

Hi Dan, I love it! You've inspired me to build one for my young nephew. Could you please confirm the widest dimension of the body as I don't believe that the front section is 80mm deep as the dimensions given by Knappers suggests (I'm guessing that the 80mm refers to the section under the...
