I thought this was worth sharing.
For some time, I've used a 'reviver' mixture to clean up the wooden parts of old tools. There's a four year old thread about it, giving the mixture, here: old-tool-cleaning-part-4-general-cleaning-with-reviver-t64945.html . I learned about it from a leaflet from TATHS, and I used a recipe contributed by one Richard Arnold - who is deservedly well known around here.
Today, I used it on something a bit bigger, a bit of an old table top.
It's mahogany, but neglected - I pulled it out of a skip a decade or two ago, thinking it was too good to waste. It now needs to become a shelf in our hall, so needs to be cleaned up a bit. I used the reviver mixture and some fine steel wool.
The photos tell the story - the lighting is exactly the same for them all.

Some close ups:
I'll give it a once over with some wax, but I'm really pleased to get this finish so easily. This old neglected wood is now something which shows its age through honest wear and tear, but is clean and fit to put into use.
