The Summer Challenge was for a Bowl. Richard Findley has kindly agreed to judge this quarter’s Challenge,


Challenge Requirements: Bowl

This month’s rules are:-

1. The Challenge is open to anyone and everyone.
Entries must be new and made specifically for the Challenge.
2. Entries must be made of wood which must be turned on a lathe using woodturning tools.
3. The bowl can be any size or shape.
4. Segmented turning, piercing, carving, colouring, pyrography and texturing are allowed for this challenge. However, the judge must be able to see your turning skills!

Please post three images of your work together with details of the wood used, the tools and methods used to make it and any key dimensions.

A fourth picture may be added (but is not compulsory) if needed to show any other interesting details of your entry.

[Random Orbital Bob]

Cherry, approx 12" diameter and 2 deep. 3/8" bowl gouge for the most with a little scraping action for the wall to base transition. Sanded to 400 and then finished with 2 coats of finishing oil. Not buffed as I prefer a less glossy finish.

I've added a fourth picky filled with apples to give the idea of scale.

Here is my effort in yew. It measures approx 9" x 4" and was turned mostly with my 3/8 bowl gouge, I also used my home made carbide tool to get the undercut. Finished with shellac and wax.

Turned from Spalted Hornbeam and measures 6" X 2 3/4" .

Turned with a bowl gauge and scraper to finish. Chucking point removed after reversing to leave a slight foot to raise the bowl a little.

Sanded from 240grit down to 600grit then 5 coats of hard wax oil left to dry for 1 week then buffed to a gloss with the chestnut buffing system.

Tried to keep the shape simple to show the grain.

Natural Edged Cherry Bowl
Turned wet from a tree felled locally in February.
Diameter 136 - 150 mm, Height 100mm, Wall thickness 6mm
Chain Saw, 3/8” bowl gouge, parting tool, skew - finished with wax

This is a bowl made using Canadian Maple and Walnut

It was turned using a 1/2" bowl gouge and a 3/4" round nosed scraper

Sanding started at 120 grit and finished with 800 grit.

The finish applied is multiple coats of clear spray lacquer

Have finally got around to entering the competition.

This is a simple yew bowl where I tried to leave the timber to speak for itself. The log was brought around to me by my mate's lad, and I used the chainsaw and band saw to get a blank on the lathe, I rough turned it last autumn and finished it this week. The finished bowl is 8 1/2" wide and 3 3/4" high. I turned it with a 3/8 bowl gouge, finishing with a french curve scraper for the inside, it was reversed on the nova cole jaws to tidy up the base. I sanded to 600 grit, used 3 coats of (danish) oil and one of wax.

I think the hardest part was the photography (and uploading the pics), not happy but will practice more.

Many firsts for me here. Bowl and integrated stand, Bowl in Greenheart, stand/base in Oak. Base mostly my 1/2" bowl gouge. Bowl... anything and everything. the only thing that cut properly was my skew chisel which did all the outside, top and chamfer.. Wood just too hard. Tungsten carbide and tool steel scrapers used to hollow the bowl. Finish wax polish.

And the twist to it, a secret box the lid/bowl screws into the base/box.

I always wanted to take up woodturning, so when a decent sized Laburnum tree came down in the winter of 2014 in my fathers garden I cut up this wood, put it away to dry and set about getting the equipment to start turn. This is my second laburnum bowl from this wood. about 15cm wide and 5.5cm deep. Sanded to 400 grit, sealed and wax finished.

Fruit Bowl in Chestnut.

I am a novice turner, less than 12 months into the spinney side of things. Wood is chestnut finished with carnuba wax. Dimensions 10.5" x 1". Bowl gauge used throughout.







Trying to take a decent photo of the profile of the bowl seems to have defeated me.

Bowl is made from (fairly) rippled Ash. 240mm dia x 50mm o/a height. Rolled rim with undercut to inside. Made mainly with a 10mm gouge and sanded to an appropriate finish. Satin finish, buffed on the lathe.

Bowl in Long Leaf Maple,10" by 2 1/2". Used a 3/8" bowl gouge and a scraper to refine the inside curve and clean up the bottom to remove the chucking recess, while it was in the cole jaws. Didnt start this til yesterday afternoon so got the inside turned and 2 coats of DO on it with lamps to help dry while it was still spinning . Then on to the cole jaws early this AM and clean up and DO and lamps, etc. Sanded to 320, wish I could have buffed it with the wheels but no time. Outstanding grain. Thanks for watching and supporting the challenge,good turnout this time round.

This is my entry, it's American white Ash, size is 200mm diameter x 70mm high. The blank was mounted to a face plate and the spigot and outside turned, then mounted in the chuck and hollowed out to 5mm wall thickness, then reversed and held in the button jaws to remove the spigot. Sanded from 120-320 grit, 2 coats of cellulose sanding sealer, then 2 coats of wood wax 22. Tools used were a 1/4" parting tool to form the spigot and the rest was done with a 3/8th bowl gouge.

A natural edged bowl in Laburnam, this wood came from a tree growing in the upper parts of the Preseli Mountains, it was well over 100 years old and was growing in a very hard environment as can be seen from the numerous shakes and gnarled surface, the challenge with this bowl was keeping it in one piece while turning!

I use a 1/2" bowl gouge, and a negative rake scraper to finish the interior, finished down to 400 grit and shellac as the final polished surface which is done to a high gloss. The foot is intentional and is square (not dovetail)

Cracks and gaps have been filled with Turquoise powder and epoxy for increased interest and colour contrast.

Dimensions: 170mm wide 90mm deep (app) wall 8mm.

Potpourri bowl. Very wide rim that shows off the contents. 8" wide and 3.5" deep. The outside was ebonies and the rim has some gold finish.

The bowl was made from Ash. All completed with a Hamlet Bowl Gauge (one of their double ended) Very please with the inside as it's a very nice "curve"
