    Cars that make you smile

At 17 I bought a 1970 MG Midget, blew the engine up so had it bored out to 1650 then had a stage 2 head on it, great fun but cornering in the wet was not a strong point. Volvo 740GLT 2.3 turbo was more fun than something shaped like a brick should be. Most of the others are just transport

    Another rat thread

Could be he has a phobia, many do. In which case nothing will truly placate him. I'd put a couple of safe bait boxes down and point out the fact nothing has touched them. Won't stop him but takes the wind out of his argument

    Cars - Form over function

Learned to drive in a Saab 99, lovely car and those bumpers were very useful. It's getting hard to tell the current crop of cars apart, especially the SUV shapes. Is it a Jag or a Kia? Not good for brand status

    Need to escape/reset

Looking back at the threads you have posted showing all the wonderful and creative things you have done there, over and above what is called for by any job description, makes it so much worse that you have come to feeling this way. I'm sure your efforts have been appreciated by those who are...

    Regrets

Knowing my luck it'd be the workings of 'Blaster' Bates rather than oxtail soup

    Mystery object!

Imperial drill sizes, 7/32 and 11/64 look about right. Possibly homemade to keep the mist frequently used ones to hand by a drill press

    CA (superglue) not setting

Might be a daft question but are your plastics compatible with CA glue? Can't remember which types exactly but I know (guess how!) that with some the CA just sits on the surface and won't set

    Grow your own ... 'shrooms

If you've got access to some freshly felled broadleaf tree trunks, not less than 4" thick, you can have a regular supply for years. Drill rings of half inch holes, 1½ inches deep, around the log, 4 inches or so apart in a staggered pattern. Fill these holes with spawn to within ½" of the...

    Aurora tonight

It's been pretty impressive here for an hour or so, didn't expect to see anything this far south. The colours show up much better in the photos using night vision than with the naked eye. Last time they were visible here was 25 years ago and I missed them then, so it's been a bit of a wait...

    Lilac wood

Splits badly when drying and often has a spiral grain. Some sources on the net show it with an almost olive like grain but in 30+ years of gardening I've only ever seen it be a pale and uninteresting wood. Apparently easy to turn, probably you'd get some pen blanks from it

    A sad donation.

What a pity his family cannot appreciate what he went through. As we lose the people who remember it seems we edge ever closer to repeating the same folly. Who will stand up as they did? Late stepfather was on landing craft out of Poole, rarely spoke of what happened but I am still astounded...

    Unpaving

Have a dig around the patio edges with a trowel, if the slabs are properly haunched with mortar then it's a fair bet they are either on a continuous bed over a 'hardcore' base, or possibly laid on dry mix over sub base then pointed. The first is a right pain to take up, the second not so bad...

    Something new

Would you have enough depth to use barrel hinges and a magnetic catch? That way nothing is seen on the surface and won't detract from the excellent surface finish. Iirc the subject of box hardware came up a while ago. There's a box maker who also supplies really good hardware but can't remember...

    Wildflower seeds / garden

Old flower meadows were mostly cut for hay, the process of cutting, drying, raking and gathering allowed the flower seeds to ripen and fall in the field before the hay was carted. The last place I was at had a wild flower meadow that was cut in late June, once seed had set, with an Allen scythe...
